In 2007, USCAR commissioned an R & D initiative called 'Integrated Polymer Magnesium Front End Module' to explore automotive related materials and material processes. The initiative, sponsored by ACC (Advanced Composites Consortium) focuses on developing materials and processes enabling the high volume production of vehicles that, when compared with today's vehicles are: half the mass, as affordable, more recyclable and of equal or better quality and durability. The USCAR slide presentation demonstrates the development of GTI's fully encapsulated magnesium shotgun utilizing the Powder Impression Molding (PIM) process to provide a multi-material solution for this front end application that meets FreedomCar goals.
